What is GDPR?
GDPR is legislation that regulates the protection of personal data within the European Union. The legislation applies to all organizations that collect, store, process and share personal data, regardless of their size or the sector in which they operate. The legislation sets strict requirements for the way in which organizations collect and process personal data and imposes sanctions for violations.
For example, organizations must be able to demonstrate that they have the data subject's consent to process his or her personal data. Organizations must also ensure appropriate technical and organizational measures are in place to protect personal data against loss, theft or misuse. Furthermore, individuals have the right to view, change or delete their personal data.
It is important that organizations comply with the GDPR to avoid fines and reputational damage. For example, for a serious violation of the GDPR, a fine can be imposed up to 4% of an organization's global annual turnover or up to 20 million euros, whichever is higher.
